The Verdict

If you’re in a hurry, there are five simple steps you can follow to get your money back. Of course, there could be other methods to cancel your NordVPN subscription, but we consider what follows to be the most hassle-free.

  1. Log-in to your NordVPN account
  2. Click on the Dashboard tab and look for “My Services.”
  3. Click the symbol next to “Change Plan” and choose “Cancel automatic payments.”
  4. Contact customer support using live chat or email and ask to cancel all the subscriptions and receive a refund.
  5. After 1–2 days of processing, you should have the full amount refunded.

If you’re considering joining NordVPN again, don’t worry. Terminating your NordVPN account isn’t permanent, and you can still resubscribe using the same email.

A Detailed Step-by-Step Guide on How To Cancel NordVPN

Okay, so we’ve wrapped our heads around the whole process. Let’s head to NordVPN website and begin our refund claim!

Log in to Your NordVPN Account

The first thing we did was head to NordVPN and sign in with our email and password.

There, we found an overview of the account information and tabs that took us to different profile sections. We selected the “Dashboards” tab, which contains a section titled “My Services.”

Select Cancel Automatic Payments

Under My Services, we found information about our NordVPN subscription and its current status, which was, of course, active. Then, we clicked on the drop-down menu next to “Change Plan” and selected “Cancel Auto-Renewal.”

A pop-up window appeared, asking us if we’re sure we want to cancel automatic payments. We chose “Confirm Cancellation” and moved on to the next step.

You can verify that the automatic payments are canceled by looking at the “Change Plan” button. After cancelation, it’ll become “Extend Plan” instead.

Select a Contact Option at “Contact Us”

Okay, so we’ve stopped our service from automatically renewing; now we need to stop the service altogether.

We did this by going to the “Contact Us” tab and choosing between “Email” or “Live Chat.” Since we wanted the fastest way possible, we chose “Live Chat” and almost immediately connected to a customer service representative.

Once a friendly agent welcomed us, we asked to cancel subscription.

Of course, the first thing the agent did was offer anything to rectify our issue. They’re not going to be too persuasive, but they might ask why you want to suspend your account. We just said that we didn’t need it anymore, so we don’t get into further retention efforts.

Once the agent accepted our cancellation request, we were now eligible for our money back.

Ask for Your Refund

Once we asked the agent for a refund, he asked us again if we were disappointed by any feature. Then, he came back a few minutes later, saying that our refund request has been approved and that we’ll receive the full refund in five to ten business days.

Sit Back and Wait

Now, all we had to do was sit back and wait for our money to be returned to bank account. Sure enough, the same day next week, we were credited the full subscription amount. However, some other users waited weeks for their money, so there’s not really an average time frame.

In most cases, you should have a smooth process until the funds reach your account. There are, however, some cases where you won’t get a refund or get it after considerable delays.

Can I Get a Refund After 30 Days?

This is probably the only other reason you could be ineligible for a refund. NordVPN states that its money-back guarantee program works for the first 30 days of subscription only.

We think it’s worth a shot to try if you’re past your 30 days. If you’re one or two days late, they can still offer you the refund.

However, NordVPN has the right to deem you ineligible for a refund based on their terms and conditions.

Can I Get a Refund on Apple App Store?

This is another scenario where you can run into difficulties getting your refund processed. Subscribing to a third-party service on the Appstore still falls under Apple’s terms and conditions.

Agents on the live chat weren’t sure how Apple handles refund claims but said that Apple is the decisive factor in whether you receive your refund or not.

On Apple’s Media Services terms and conditions, they stated that the only reason to deny a refund is if they suspect fraud or refund abuse. If you claim you want your service refunded for technical reasons, you should still be eligible for one.

We recommend you do that in the first 14 days of subscription. Apple’s general refund policy states 14 days as the standard rule for refunds.

Can I Do This Repeatedly?

The obvious answer is no. It’s easy for NordVPN to notice that you’ve refunded your subscription before. Attempting to do it again puts you at risk of being denied the second refund.

Even if we did get the second refund, we wouldn’t take any chances with our money. So, tread carefully.

Is There A Free Trial Period Available?

As of writing this article, there isn’t a free trial option in NordVPN, and, in our opinion, they don’t need it.

We haven’t received any reports of refund claims that got rejected for unknown reasons. As long as you’re in the 30-day window and not breaking any terms, you can try the VPN as much as you like and claim a refund with an almost 100% success rate.

Should I Still Use a VPN?

From our professional standpoint, most definitely. The more you research about Virtual Private Networks, the more you’ll learn about the essential layer of security they add.

The most obvious reason to have a VPN enabled at all times is to enjoy enhanced privacy. Using a VPN will make it significantly harder for a hacker to access your data. It’ll do so by masking your IP address and search history, sometimes by using military-grade AES 256-bit encryption.

It’s true; using VPNs usually makes our connection slower sometimes. This isn’t an issue if you choose a top-rated VPN service that’s known for the quality and reliability of its servers.

Some VPNs are known for their steady streaming speeds; others are known for their ability to unblock any geo-restricted service without getting your actual IP flagged. The more you research different VPNs, the more you’ll be aware of the specific benefits each one offers.

NordVPN Alternatives

So, NordVPN wasn’t for you, and that’s okay. What’s important right now is not to compromise your privacy for too long and look for alternatives that work better for your needs.

We ran into some bugs with NordVPN’s app, and only a few servers supported torrenting. You might have different reasons for canceling the subscription or just want to try another service. Below, we chose two of our most recommended VPN services that offer high speeds and a lot of useful features.

ExpressVPN – Best for Versatility

We love ExpressVPN because it rarely disappoints us. We were impressed by the high speeds on most servers and streamed HD Netflix with zero buffering.

ExpressVPN boasts about its 3000 active servers around the world. The servers are located in over 85 countries and consistently give you blistering speeds.

The best part? We were able to watch all major streaming platforms without any restrictions. Don’t worry about any IP leaks because ExpressVPN has high-level AES 256-bit encryption that immediately cuts your internet if the servers stop working for any reason.

Since we were slightly disappointed with NordVPN’s app interface, we were looking forward to ExpressVPN’s take on the user interface.

To our pleasant surprise, we came across a clean user interface and a big power button that toggles on and off. We found it simple and welcoming. Sure, NordVPN has a more complex interface with a map view. However, we prefer simple and to-the-point user interfaces that make us forget about the VPN in the background.

In short, ExpressVPN is a highly respected VPN service that keeps you secured without limiting your streaming/downloading speed.

ProtonVPN – Best for Security

We consider ProtonVPN to be one of the most trusted and most secure VPNs that you can start using.

It’s a Switzerland-based VPN service, and the developers created ProtonVPN with the notion that everyone should be able to surf the internet with the highest degree of privacy.

One of the best features of ProtonVPN is that they actively state that they don’t log any of your data from their servers. Some VPN providers do that in case of criminal activity, where an investigation can lead to your actual IP getting exposed.

Privacy is something that the developers at ProtonVPN value greatly. That’s why they use world-class AES-256 encryption along with a 2048-bit RSA handshake and HMAC SHA 256 authentication.

Perhaps what impressed us the most was how they made sure their servers were secure. ProtonVPN developers built the servers in what used to be fallout shelters. They are fortified and 1000 meters deep into the ground!

Not impressed yet? ProtonVPN also has Secure Core servers that use multi-hop technology (double VPN)—a technology that essentially helps hide your personal data more thoroughly. This is why ProtonVPN is commonly used hand-in-hand with TOR and can be used to access a lot of previously inaccessible parts of the internet.
