How to Connect Roku to WiFi Without Remote

If you have lost or broke your Roku remote, but the Roku device is still connected to the WiFi network, it would be easy to update your WiFi settings using the Roku App and its digital remote tab.

But what to do if Roku TV isn’t connected to WiFi anymore?

The main challenge is to make your Roku and your smartphone, which acts as a digital remote, to be on the same WiFi network. If Roku and smartphone are on a different network – the digital remote app will not work.

Here I provide a step-by-step guide on how to connect Roku to WiFi without a remote.

Step-by-step guide

What is required to connect Roku to WiFi without remote:

1. Roku was previously connected to WiFi network.
2. You know the WiFi network name and password of a previously connected network.
3. You have two smartphones on hand.
4. Mobile network plan that allows to set up hotspots.

If you lack any of it, there is no other way to connect Roku to Wifi without a remote. You will have to buy a new physical remote, which costs around $20.

If you need an internet connection for your Roku TV and have an ethernet cable – just plugged in it into your device. Then you can use your mobile device as a digital remote with the Roku App and update your WiFi settings.

1. Mobile hotspot

Create a mobile hotspot on one of the smartphones with the exact same name and password as a network to which Roku TV was connected before. The idea is to make your Roku pick up and connect to this hotspot automatically.

2. Getting digital remote

Next step will be to take the second smartphone which will act as a digital remote to your Roku TV.

  1. Connect your second smartphone to the mobile hotspot that you set up on the first smartphone.
  2. Download the official Roku app.
  3. Roku app has a digital remote functionality that you can now use.

3. Update your Roku WiFi settings

Now you can go to the Roku settings and connect to a new WiFi network. Don’t forget that your digital remote will stop working after Roku will get connected to a new network. To continue to use your smartphone as a remote, connect it again to the same network as your Roku device.

The Bottom Line

There is a way to connect your Roku device to your WiFi network, even if you don’t have access to a physical remote. If you don’t remember the WiFi network name and password to which your Roku device was connected before, consider buying a new remote, which costs about $20 on Amazon.

What Is Roku TV?

Roku TV is a smart TV that lets users stream entertainment from Netflix, Hulu, Amazon Prime, YouTube, and many other platforms. Unlike traditional television, it does not work with a cable package or other network package. Instead, it works exclusively through streaming.

This means that you have access to all your entertainment on a single platform. However, it also means that your Roku TV needs to be connected to your home WiFi to work.

When you first set up your Roku TV, you will probably be using the remote that came with the device. However, there may be a time when you can’t find or access the remote. Luckily, there are ways to set up your Roku without your remote.

How Can a VPN Help?

A VPN, or Virtual Private Network, provides more privacy and security for information sent over your network. Although usually internet users who move around or need to connect remotely to a public internet network use a VPN, it’s a good idea to use one in your home as well.

It can also open your Roku up to content that’s geo-locked. Ever wondered what British Netflix is like? A VPN can allow you to access the content you otherwise wouldn’t be able to watch.
