One simple way to do this is by using a VPN. In this Surfshark VPN review, we’re taking a look at the many features that make this VPN stand out from the crowd. It’s loaded with features, applications, and upsides that definitely grab our attention—so, let’s see if it lives up to all the hype. 

About Surfshark

Surfshark, like all other VPN providers, sets out to protect your identity and your private information while you’re scouring the web. The company is based in the British Virgin Islands, and they have over 1,700 servers all over the world. 

While the company is somewhat new to the scene of internet privacy, they’ve made a name for themselves pretty quickly by being one of the frontrunners for streaming and torrenting. Of course, many VPNs promise absolute security with perks like streaming or torrenting, but not all of them are actually able to. 

There are a few factors we want to look at with all our VPN reviews:

• Features
• Customer Service
• Price

These are the five major things we’ll look at as we make our way through these Surfshark VPN reviews—so, here’s what you need to know: 

Jurisdiction

Jurisdiction is one of the most important factors when shopping around for a VPN because the VPN’s main office and servers’ location will impact the protection and privacy you get from that company. 

For example, certain countries allow third-parties to gain access to user data while other countries have strict laws preventing that. Ideally, you’d want your VPN provider to be located in the country that prevents it because they can’t make any transfer of your information legally. 

Surfshark is located in the British Virgin Islands, and there are no strict data retention laws here.

Transparency 

Transparency is key with VPN services because they should be clear about their policies and how they’re protecting your information. We can never know anything for sure, so we end up trusting our data to the VPN provider, so it’s important that they thoroughly explain how they keep everything safe. 

We took a look at all of Surfshark’s privacy policies to see if they log any information. According to their logging policy, they collect and store the following data:

• Performance data
• Unsuccessful connection attempts
• Frequency of use

They call this a “no logging” policy, which is somewhat true. While no one can use this information to identify you, we still like to see a no-logging policy that keeps less information than this. 

The good news is, they don’t take any personally identifiable information such as browsing activity or IP addresses. 

It does get a little more unsettling when we read their privacy policy: 

“To maintain the perfect quality of our Services and provide you with efficient support, we collect diagnostics information and monitor crash reports on our apps. The information we collect contains aggregated performance data, the frequency of use of our services, unsuccessful connection attempts, and other similar information.”

We never like to see broad blanket statements like “other similar information.” While it might not seem like a big deal, we never know what that means, and it could mean anything. There are no specifics, and after diving through the entire website, we’re still unable to find any connection between that and their logging policy. Perhaps they just put it there to scare us? 

When choosing a VPN provider, it’s also important to understand what type of data they collect for marketing purposes.  Some services don’t do this, but Surfshark collects advertising identifiers to help apps like Google Play create customized advertisements based on your search history. This could mean that somewhere in their platform, they’re storing your search history intending to sell that information to craft uniquely catered advertisements. 

It could be true; it could be false; there’s no way of knowing for sure. Luckily, you can opt-out of this by adjusting your personal settings, and we highly recommend doing so. 

Surfshark Features 

Now that you have a little understanding of what Surfshark VPN is and how it works let’s talk about specific features. For each of the following features, we’ll break down what it is, why it’s important, and how Surfshark uses it to protect you and your privacy. 

RAM-only Servers 

When you’re using a VPN, you’re not necessarily changing your IP address; you’re merely disguising it. So, when someone searches what IP you’re operating from, they’ll only see the “new” IP. 

This process is made possible by servers located all over the world. These servers require hard drives, and even though there isn’t any information stored on the hard drives, malicious third-parties could still access those hard drives through the use of codes. 

So, let’s say the physical servers were exposed. Even if there isn’t any information on the hard drive, the third-party could get into the servers and potentially see what you’re doing if they have access to the private keys. This can even happen remotely. 

Surfshark is one of the only VPN providers offering RAM-only servers that don’t require a hard drive or private keys. Using RAM only memory means that all information stored on the servers is automatically wiped out when the server is turned off.

This is more volatile and risky to the VPN provider, but it adds an extra layer of security for the user.  In the theoretical event that servers were exposed, everything stored on there will be eliminated as soon as they’re shut off. 

Kill Switch

A kill switch is an important feature we look for in all our VPN reviews. The kill switch drops your connection to the internet in the event that you lose connection to your VPN. For example, if you were to lose your VPN funnel, your current browsing would be exposed as well as your real IP address. 

When this happens, the kill switch immediately drops your internet connection to help protect your privacy. If you’re on the internet in a heavily censored and restricted country, this could be the difference between remaining safe and potentially facing legal action. 

Surfshark makes it easy to enable your kill switch with one click on the button. Once you turn it on, you’ll never have to worry about anyone accessing your browser and seeing what you’re doing. 

Private DNS & Leak Protection

The DNS or domain name system is like a giant phone book for the internet. It’s what allows us to connect domain names to IP addresses without having to remember specific IPs. 

Every website has a DNS, and Surfshark offers Private DNS, which means that all the DNS servers are encrypted. This protection adds another layer that makes it even more difficult for malicious third parties to see what websites you’re accessing. 

It’s important to have this because even with all the previously mentioned features, people trying to access your computer may still be able to see what websites you’re visiting based on the DNS. 

A DNS leak occurs when there is a problem between the originating computer and the DNS resolver. When this happens, unencrypted information is sent through the network, and if third-parties are watching over you, this is where they finally get their opportunity to see what you’re doing. 

Surfshark claims to prevent DNS leaks by blocking DNS requests and, instead, directing them through their encrypted tunnel. They don’t keep any logs, so your data is safe with them in a perfect world. 

Camouflage Mode

Some VPN users might be nervous as to whether or not someone can tell they’re using a VPN. This is a big issue that prevents people from streaming and torrenting because those platforms can detect when someone is using a VPN service. 

Where there’s a will, there’s a way, and Surfshark offers something called Camouflage Mode. 

Here you’ll use obfuscated servers when accessing your VPN and browsers like Tor to make it harder for third-parties to tell you’re using a VPN. The ultimate goal here is to make it look like no privacy tools are being used so you can bypass VPN blockers. 

This feature is critically important if you like in highly censored countries where you’re not allowed to use VPNs. Obfuscated servers will help you bypass blockers and get what you desire from your VPN. 

NoBorders Mode

A lot of people don’t realize that platforms like Netflix offer different libraries based on your location. If you live in an oppressed country, you might get Netflix, but you might not be able to watch some of the shows you like. In some places, they may only allow you to watch shows that fit a certain agenda. 

You need a feature that will not allow third-parties to detect that you’re using a VPN. Many streaming platforms and other websites may not be accessible with some proxy or VPN.

NoBorders mode is a specific feature unique to Surfshark that makes it easier to bypass geo-restrictions so you can watch more of what you want and jump through fewer hoops to get there. 

With a lot of VPNs, you need to surf aimlessly trying to find servers that allow streaming, but Surfshark keeps them all in one place under the NoBorders mode. When you enable this mode, you’ll be able to click on any location and access a VPN server that allows streaming. 

Best of all, because of the obfuscated servers, no one can even tell you’re using a VPN. 

Double VPN

Surfshark offers a multi-hop feature that allows you to connect two multiple servers at the same time. So, why would someone want to do that? 

First, it adds an extra layer of security. In the event that you lose connection to one of the servers, you’ll have a second one there to protect you.

Second, you’re hiding your identity more reliably. More is always better when it comes to internet security and having two servers in two different countries makes it that much harder for people to find out your actual IP address. 

Think about it this way, even if they can manage to source the location of one IP, they’ll have a second one in a different country to confuse them before they’re able to find your own IP address. 

This will most of the time slow down your internet speed, so while it might add a nice layer of security, we don’t always recommend it. In fact, they even include a section on their website where they explain that they don’t recommend it because it will reduce internet speed significantly. 

If you decide to use Double VPN, it’s recommended that you choose one server close to you and another one that is relevant to what you’re doing. For example, if you’re trying to access a Chinese website and you live in Montreal, Canada, you’ll want to choose Canadian and Chinese servers. 

CleanWeb

So many internet ads come with more than what meets the eye. From first glance, it looks like a regular ad, but it’s actually a piece of malicious software trying to gain access to your personal information. 

Using an adblocker with your VPN is a smart choice, and we’re pleased to see that Surfshark offers one. CleanWeb blocks ads and malware before they even load, which helps save data and increase browsing speed. If you’re looking for a VPN for business purposes, it’s also a great way to limit phishing software risk. 

It’s important to take all the steps necessary to protect yourself, and one area that a VPN might have a hard time keeping your safe is with Adware and Malware. Even if you’re using a VPN, personally identifiable information in the wrong hands can be disastrous.

Take a clean sweep across the board and eliminating ads altogether is the smartest way to prevent this from happening. 

Whitelister

You might have heard of the term “split tunneling” before. VPNs have their place in protecting your identity, but you can’t always use them for anything. If you find a website that you need to access but you can’t when using a VPN, you can add it to your Surfshark Whitelist, and the VPN will allow you to bypass the VPN to access that site. 

The obvious upside here is that you don’t need to connect and disconnect the VPN to access these sites. This feature is especially helpful in business where you might need to protect certain websites but let a larger portion of them through without the VPN. 

You can also access connected devices like printers without having to disconnect. Not only does it keep you safer, but it helps speed up your workflow, which makes everyone’s lives easier. 

Protocols

A protocol is a technology helping VPNs send data throughout the internet. This feature is essential if you want to do anything online, and there are a variety of protocols out there, each with their own pros and cons. 

Some offer faster speeds, but they don’t contain the same high level of security. Others are more secure, but they’re so slow you almost can’t operate them. It’s important to find a nice balance between speed and security. 

Surfshark VPN supports the following protocols: 

• IKEv2

Internet Key Exchange version 2 is a highly secure protocol that works best with local servers. It’s most popular for mobile users, but it offers high speeds and industry leading security.

• OpenVPN 

OpenVPN leads the league with long-distance connections, and that’s why we highly recommend it in our VPN reviews. It’s also an open-source protocol, which means that developers from all over the world can go in and update it and make changes. It works best with desktop operating systems, and it offers industry leading encryption. 

• Shadowsocks 

If you live in an oppressive environment where you don’t have access to certain things due to government restrictions, Shadowsocks is a great option. It’s an encrypted proxy designed specifically for bypassing geo-restrictions, and you can only use it on Android and Windows. 

Encryption

VPN encryption generates a key that encrypts digital data so other people can’t see it or access it. You can use encryption for a variety of things, from hiding personal conversations to blocking entire files. Adding a VPN to this offers another layer of security as well. 

The process of encryption depends on the method chosen. Surfshark and others choose AES-256 encryption, which is the industry standard, and it encrypts data going through the network and to each device. 

So, let’s help you understand how this works. VPN encryption takes language we all know and understand and turns it into a language that no one understands. Then, it takes that language and turns it back into something we can read again. 

Let’s say we’re trying to access Netflix. You would send the request, and the VPN client would receive that and begin sending it through an encrypted tunnel. 

As Netflix receives the request, it’s decrypted, and then they send it back to the server. The server then encrypts it again and sends it to the VPN client. 

Lastly, the decrypted data gets sent back to you so you can see it. So, as you can see, encryption means a lot more than hiding conversations and emails. Encryption hides entire processes so no one can see what you’re doing. 

Simultaneous Connections 

A feature we look for in a great VPN is one that allows you to connect multiple devices under one VPN client. This feature is incredibly important for households where data protection is desired and in businesses where you may need to keep everything as private as possible. 

With a single subscription to Surfshark, you can use as many devices as you want with unlimited bandwidth. You don’t need to upgrade to an additional package to access this feature, and you can use the VPN on any of the permitted devices as well. (we’ll get to that) 

This feature is huge and not something we’ve seen with any other VPN provider. Most of the competition will set a limit of four or five devices, but that’s not the case here. If you operate a business and want all your employees to work using a VPN, you could do that with one single purchase of Surfshark VPN. 

Supported devices

Surfshark works with every major platform, including Windows, macOS, iOS, Android, Smart TV, Router, and more. 

Since they don’t have a simultaneous device limit, this makes it possible for you to use the VPN on every device in your household without having to worry. 

In the event that you do have a device that isn’t covered under Surfshark, you don’t need to worry here either. You can install the app on your router using Tomato or DD-WRT, and then it will protect the data on any of the devices that you run through the router. 

While it seems like the offerings are nearly endless, we did notice that they vary greatly from platform to platform. It would be nice to see more consistency.

You can also use Surfshark VPN for streaming devices such as AppleTV and Amazon Fire TV. They even allow you to bypass geo-restrictions on gaming systems like the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One. 

Lastly, you get the Surfshark Chrome and Firefox extensions. The browser extensions do not offer the same security level as the full VPN because they’re proxies. So, instead of funneling traffic through, they simply spoof your IP address. While you’re not getting top-notch encryption, the browser extension is a nice little add-on for occasional internet users. 

Trust DNS

Surfshark offers a great feature here called a TrustDNS. This feature changes your domain name to a numerical IP address, which encrypts your DNS requests and allows you to switch to one of their third-party servers. 

As a result, your internet service provider can’t see what websites you visit or access your browsing history because everything is encrypted using numerical codes. According to Surfshark, this shouldn’t have any impact on your uploading and downloading speeds, either. 

If you’re just interested in encrypting your traffic information, you can use their free DNS changer without even needing to purchase a subscription to Surfshark VPN. That said, if you’re trying to protect yourself and stay as private as possible, we recommend getting a full VPN service. 

Streaming

Surfshark has a great reputation for allowing access to blocked content on streaming sites like Netflix. Across multiple tests, it reliably unblocks Netflix, Disney+, and BBC iPlayer. We’ve even seen instances where Surfshark successfully allowed access to Hulu, HBO Max, and Prime Video. 

Best of all, it unlocks Netflix in 15 different international countries, which is something we’ve never seen before. 

Even though we don’t have laws restricting the content we watch in the US, the Surfshark Netflix libraries change from country to country, and they might be currently showing something in Italy that you would like to watch for free on Netflix. Without a VPN permitting access to that content, you’ll have to either buy or rent it. 

Surfshark unblocked content in the following locations:

One of the most difficult aspects of bypassing geo-restrictions is finding servers that work. To help with this issue, many VPN providers offer dedicated servers that are used specifically for the purpose of streaming. 

Surfshark doesn’t offer this, but we quickly realized that they don’t need to. Almost all of their servers work fine for streaming, they offer high-quality video, no lag, and they load quickly as well. 

If we want to take things to the next level, we can also discuss the fact that you get unlimited simultaneous devices with limitless bandwidth so you can stream shows on all your devices without having to worry about maxing out. One VPN account will allow you to play Netflix in as many rooms as you like, on as many devices as you can fathom. 

Torrenting

Usually, when we find that a VPN is a good choice for streaming, it works well for torrenting too. Surfshark is a great choice for torrenting because it provides a solid privacy policy and encryption to prevent anyone from figuring out what you’re doing.

While Surfshark doesn’t provide specific servers for streaming, they offer P2P servers for torrenting, which helps make navigating the system a little easier. 

Plus, you get a kill switch, which is an important feature in the event that you lose connection to your VPN. If that ever happens, the kill switch will immediately disconnect you from the internet, so any spying eyes will not be able to see what you’re doing.

If you try to torrent on a server that isn’t listed here, the VPN automatically routes your traffic to the servers that permit it. The choice the VPN makes depends on your actual location. So, if you’re based in the United States, chances are you’ll get a P2P server located in the country or neighboring Canada. This helps ensure you get the highest download speeds. 

You can use some of the most popular torrent clients, including BitTorrent, uTorrent, Vuze, Transmission, and Deluge. 

Best of all, the CleanWeb feature helps protect you from one of the most dangerous aspects of torrenting; malware. Overall, we’re pretty impressed with everything that Surfshark does to allow its users to get the most from their VPN experience. So far, we haven’t seen any lapses or misfires in this service. 

Surfshark Alternatives 

If you’re still not sure about Surfshark, one great way to see if it’s the right choice is to compare it to other popular VPN services to see how it stacks up. This section of our Surfshark VPN review will compare it to four other options and see how the features, security, and speed hold up against the competition. 

• ExpressVPN

ExpressVPN is a highly popular VPN provider offering an array of benefits. Let’s break it down detail by detail to see which you would prefer. 

First, we’ll start with the features. One of the biggest standout features of Surfshark is that they allow unlimited simultaneous connections with the purchase of one account. Like most other VPNs, ExpressVPN only offers five connections. That’s still a solid number, but it’s not unlimited. 

Surfshark also includes an ad block and malware scanner included for no charge. ExpressVPN does offer custom firmware that doesn’t require any configuration for routers in countries with strict laws. 

Overall, you can’t get past the sheer number of free features that Surfshark adds on to their plan, and we don’t think anyone can compare in this area. 

When it comes to streaming and torrenting, both of these VPNs are pretty equal. They both do an excellent job of unblocking geo-restricted content worldwide, and most of their servers work compared to some other VPNs. 

We expect that there will be upsides and downsides with both of these in this regard. You might gain access to certain content with ExpressVPN that you can’t get with Surfshark and vice versa. It could be worth checking out both if streaming and torrenting is your primary interest. 

Lastly, let’s look at security. Both services offer 256-AES encryption, which is what we expect, but ExpressVPN has a more secure RSA key that’s 4096 bits long. It’s twice as long as Surfshark’s, but that doesn’t necessarily mean it’s twice as secure.

Both VPNs offer a kill switch, but ExpressVPN does go the extra mile with something called cipher block chaining, which means you can’t decrypt data unless you’ve already received access to other data on the server. In a nutshell, malicious attackers can’t pick and choose what data they’d like to take, they need to have all of it, or they’ll get nothing.

All in all, both of these VPNs are highly secure, great for streaming, and they offer plenty of features that make using the platforms easier and more enjoyable. • CyberGhost

Let’s start by looking at some of the features of both of these VPNs. Both offer compatibility with all the popular systems, including Windows, macOS, iOS, Android, Apple TV, and routers.

CyberGhost has one advantage here by allowing users to set up custom connections of OpenVPN, IPSec, and L2TP with their routers.  CyberGhost also has a feature called “smart rules” that allows you to include certain features while excluding others that you don’t find important. Surfshark tends to keep things a little more simple, and while they offer a vast assortment of features, those with an upper-level understanding of VPNs might find the offerings to be a bit shallow. 

The clear advantage of Surfshark is still unlimited connections. No one is offering this. While CyberGhost does offer seven simultaneous connections, you can’t compare that to unlimited. 

For security, both Surfshark and CyberGhost have AES 256-bit encryption and strong no-logging policies that ensure that they don’t collect anything important, and even if they did, you have the strongest encryption on the planet to protect it. 

CyberGhost does offer a few more protocols, though with WireGuard and L2TP/IPSec. But, Surfshark is one of the only VPNs that you can use in China using the NoBorders feature paired with the Shadowsocks protocol that works in highly restrictive countries. 

If we look at servers and speeds, CyberGhost has a clear advantage here. They offer more than 6,300 servers in more than 89 countries. That tramples over Surfshark, and their jurisdiction in Romania is great for privacy because the country has strict laws that protect their citizens from third-party infiltration. 

Choosing between these two is nearly impossible because they both offer so much. If you’re more concerned about upload and download speed, you might want to choose CyberGhost over Surfshark. 

• PIA

Now let’s take a look at Privacy Internet Access vs Surfshark. We’ll start by taking a look at the server package. As you can likely tell by now, Surfshark doesn’t have a huge server package because they’re a pretty new player in the game, but they’ve done a great job of spreading their servers out more than any other VPN. 

PIA offers 3,340 servers in 45 different countries, and Surfshark has over 1,700 servers in 62 countries. So, Surfshark offers servers in 17 additional countries, which can make a big difference if you’re interested in torrenting and streaming. You’ll be able to use those additional countries to bypass geo-restrictions. 

One of the biggest advantages of Surfshark over PIA is streaming. PIA has jurisdiction in the United States, which isn’t the greatest for a VPN, to begin with, but you can also only unblock content in the US, Canada, and the UK. 

So, this works great if you’re outside these three countries trying to watch Netflix libraries from within, but if you’re trying to get content from outside these countries, you’re out of luck.

Since PIA doesn’t have a camouflage feature like Surfshark, you also can’t gain access to anything other than Netflix. With Surfshark, you can watch anything, including Hulu, HBO Max, and Amazon Prime. 

As for privacy, Surfsharks jurisdiction in the British Virgin Islands helps because it’s a privacy-friendly country. They don’t keep logs, and they don’t have mandatory data retention laws. 

PIA is based in the United States, and while the US does not have mandatory data retention, their privacy policy is vague and doesn’t talk much about what information they keep. If you’re concerned about your privacy, we would recommend choosing Surfshark over PIA.  

• Surfshark vs NordVPN 

NordVPN is a huge name in the VPN world so let’s make one last comparison to see if Surfshark can stand up against the giant. They both offer great multi-platform support with all the major apps and platforms you would expect. Both also include plenty of added extras, including ad-blocking, malware-scanning, wifi protection, and browser extensions. 

Where Surfshark starts to pull ahead is with their simultaneous connections and split tunneling feature. First, Surfshark allows you to connect as many devices as you’d like to the VPN. You can have your TV, computer, smartphones, and whatever else you have connected to the VPN at the same time. 

Plus, you get a split tunneling feature called “whitelister” that allows you to pick and choose which websites you’d like to bypass the VPN if you trust them or the VPN blocks them. 

While we’re boasting Surfshark as one of the best VPNs for streaming, this is where NordVPN has it beat. It’s the best for streaming because it can unblock almost anything, and it opens the door to a higher number of Netflix libraries than Surfshark as well. 

As for ease of use, we like Surfshark. VPNs aren’t complicated to use, but sometimes the creators and developers make them more involved than they have to be. Surfshark takes a simplistic approach to designing their platform, and we think that’s welcoming. It makes the process look less intimidating for people who aren’t as tech-savvy but are still concerned about internet privacy. 

Lastly, let’s talk about security. Both providers use AES-256 encryption and OpenVPN with IKEv2 protocols. We still have yet to find another VPN that supports Shadowsocks, so if you’re interested in diving really deep into the world of underground internet surfing, Surfshark might be your number one choice. 

Both offer a kill switch, and they each have an IP cloaking technology, but they’re a little different. NordVPN uses a standard tool called Obfsproxy, which hides the fact that you’re using a VPN. Surfshark has its own software called NoBorders. They both seem to work in the same way. 

Honestly, we’re surprised that Surfshark even came this close to beating NordVPN. Nord has been around forever, and they have an expansive server network that Surfshark simply can’t compete with. We do believe that Surfshark will match Nord in a short while, but for now, either of these are an excellent choice. 

Surfshark on Reddit

The problem with reading VPN reviews online is that a lot of them are biased, which is why some customers turn to online forums, where real people have shared their experiences. One place to get an honest outlook of Surfshark is Reddit. We checked it out to see what people are saying. 

“I use Surfshark and no problem with Netflix and a number of other services but haven’t been able to get it to work with Amazon Prime video service. Have it installed on 16 devices, have been using it for over a month, and no crashes either, but don’t torrent anyway.”

This user is using Surfshark for streaming on 16 devices without crashes. The most frequent conversation on Reddit seems to revolve around the VPN crashing when trying to torrent. 

“I’m also using Surfshark, but I set up OpenVPN on DDWRT. I agree with you that there are occasional lags with the Windows App. But the Android one is stable.”

This person is having some issues with speed on the Windows app, and that also seems to be a common trend. A lot of people complain about speeds and crashing issues with the Windows app, so that is certainly something to keep in mind. 

Free Trial

Now it’s time for the question everyone is wondering, how much does all of this cost? Before we get to that, let’s talk about their free trial. Every VPN service needs to offer a free trial so people can test it out and see if they like it before they buy it.
