Have you heard of VPNSecure? Even though they’ve been around for about ten years, they’ve never quite found the success of their peers. Although they offer competitive prices and a fairly high level of transparency, they’re also plagued by some location issues and privacy concerns.

Does the good outweigh the bad with VPNSecure, or should you consider different options? Your complete VPNSecure review starts right now:

What is VPNSecure?

vpnsecure windows app

In many ways, VPNSecure is a fairly traditional VPN provider. They operate a worldwide network of servers that allow for private browsing. They provide customers with a few features such as adjustable encryption levels, a metasearch engine, multiple payment options, and a Stealth VPN to help bypass internet censorship.

However, VPNSecure is also the victim of poor circumstances. They’re in the middle of switching locations, and the transition is posing privacy problems for their customers.

VPNSecure Jurisdiction

In 2010, VPNSecure founder Shayne McCulloch launched the platform from his home country of Australia. For eight years, the company operated as a fairly standard VPN.

Unfortunately, everything changed in 2018 when Australia passed a controversial data collection law that compelled tech companies to hand over encrypted info on demand. As expected, VPN users fled from Australian-based VPNs, citing privacy concerns.

How Transparent is VPNSecure?

In early 2019, VPNSecure published a letter to its users. The company announced plans to move from Australia to a new home base in Hong Kong. Unfortunately, they encountered major, unforeseen problems.

First, the Hong Kong protests began. Then, COVID-19 occurred. While VPNSecure can hardly face blame for these events, they’ve unfortunately affected the company’s ability to transition smoothly from one country to another.

While we appreciate VPNSecure’s commitment to packing up and leaving their home country on behalf of their customers, it’s left their operations clearly not operating at their best.

Advanced VPNSecure Features

Even before their move, VPNSecure was a fairly straightforward VPN, free from excessive bells and whistles. However, they do have a few useful and even unique features worth noting in our VPNSecure VPN review:

  • Meta Search
vpnsecure metasearch

You don’t see this in too many VPNs. VPNSecure has a Metasearch engine. You can search in complete privacy. Their metasearch doesn’t share your IP address or search history with the search engine. This proxy search engine is free with all of their plans.

  • Cipher Strength

You can easily switch between three levels of encryption:

  • AES-128
  • AES-256

AES-256 is the strongest level of encryption and usually the default recommendation for most users. However, lower encryption can help improve your speed at times. While switching between encryption levels is a common feature in many VPNs, VPNSecure implements it well.

  • Internet Kill Switch

If your VPN connection suddenly fails, your browsing habits can suddenly be revealed. VPNSecure includes what’s called a Kill Switch. If your VPN suddenly disconnects, the Kill Switch protects your IP address from exposure.

  • Internet Censorship Bypass

In many ways, the company’s quick commitment to moving out of Australia is no surprise, given its commitment to customer privacy. They do an excellent job navigating national internet censorship and filters.

Their Stealth VPN typically works well against even heavy-duty attempts at filtering. They help open up the internet in any location.

Apps and Protocol Support

vpnsecure devices

VPNSecure works well with other software. It provides full support for a variety of popular protocols including:

  • OpenVPN
  • HTTP Proxy
  • Smart DNS
  • Obfuscation
  • SSH Socks
vpnsecure chrome vpn

Additionally, their Chrome extension is a benefit worth mentioning. You can use it to manage multiple proxies, easily switching between them right from your browser.

Servers and Locations

vpnsecure servers

VPNSecure doesn’t rival the top guys in terms of server numbers such as SurfShark or HMA, but they do provide a solid selection of servers. You get access to 80 VPN servers across 48 countries. Note these are physical, not virtual, servers.

Most servers are located in North America and Europe. In most countries, you can select from servers on the city level, although some locations only allow broader country or state (or equivalent) options.

Their coverage in Africa and South America is limited to just three servers. It’s definitely not the VPN to use if you live in those areas.

Is VPNSecure a Good Choice for Unblocking Netflix and Other Streaming Services?

Unfortunately, this is also not the service to use for unblocking streaming services. It won’t unlock Netflix, BBC, Hulu, Disney+, or many others.

Some streaming services may be tough to unblock. It’s still possible to get around these region locks, but you need a VPN specifically designed for that purpose, and that’s not VPNSecure.

Does VPNSecure Support Torrents and P2P File Sharing?

They do. They work for all torrenting clients except US10 and UK3

On the downside, P2P traffic is still subject to the same potential privacy issues as described above due to the company’s stalled move to Hong Kong.

VPNSecure Prices

vpnsecure pricing

They’re not the cheapest option, but their prices are reasonable, especially if you’re willing to commit to a long service plan. The three pricing tiers are:

  • $9.95 for one month
  • $8.32 a month for six months
  • $2.99 a month for three years

They also offer a 30-day trial offer, so you can check out the service with no financial risk.

While you can get a cheaper deal with a long-term commitment, we recommend against that at this time. It’s too hard to know what the future holds for VPNSecure, so short-term contracts seem like the more sensible choice until they get situated in Hong Kong.

Let’s wrap up our VPNSecure VPN review with an overview of the platform.

VPNSecure offers reliable service at affordable prices. While they don’t have a worldwide network of servers, they provide reliable coverage throughout the US and UK. Also, they do offer some interesting features such as a metasearch engine, adjustable encryption levels, and excellent censorship unblocking.

Unfortunately, we can’t recommend them at this time for most users. They’re in the middle of a transition from one country to another, and they can’t quite promise the level of privacy many VPN users require. However, if you can overlook those issues, there are plenty of benefits to reap.
